Miller MS Engine systems have arrived!Active Image

Finally, Miller Performance has release their long anticipated M30 forced induction engine system. See what all the buzz is about!

Explained

Miller Performance has been in development of the BMW M30 forced induction system for over 2 years; you have probably seen all the pictures of the prototype parts Miller Performance had been testing. For instance the M30 M-fs manifold with a 12 injector design. Some people have been wondering, "Why implement this system when other competitors are doing without it?" At Miller Performance Engineering BMW Forced Induction is taken to a new level of everyday drivability and power.

When Miller Performance first started to examine the different ways to approach the design of the M30 forced induction system, it was decided that it would be best to keep the stock engine ECU in place in order to leave the car in complete working order. The way the car was designed to be from the beginning. So with that in mind, think of all the benefits of using all the original systems: you can still have your car serviced where you normally would, with all diagnostic systems working the way they should, parts and diagnostics will still be carried out the normal way, and therefore no extra training is needed for your independent BMW service center Technicians.

Miller Performance is known for the highest of quality with all their BMW performance systems. This new forced induction engine system is a prime example of the meticulous design procedures that Miller employs for all development. No detail is left untouched. Out of the box thinking and execution help make this system probably the best ever forced induction system a BMW, or any car for that matter, has ever seen.

With unique and unprecedented designs for charge cooling, tuning and installation, the Miller MS series engine systems will surely pin you in your seat and spread your smile from ear to ear.

Fueling

With extensive research and development, Miller Performance found some complications. The stock engine management system is not fully capable of running in sync with the use of forced induction. When thinking of drivability for everyday use, it was first thought to use 6 bigger injectors, in place of the original ones.

The problem that occurs with this approach is that when you double your HP, you increase the range of fuel needed to run the system when you get into the high power and boost situations.

Keeping this in mind, if you have an E34 535i, stock power output is 210 BHP, and then you go and double your HP, you have also doubled the amount of operating range of the ECU and injectors. Most tuners today replace the stock injectors with bigger ones and leave it at that, not thinking much as to what the system could be if it were done differently.

The problem that bigger injectors tend to cause is a drivability issue in light throttle situations. For instance, cruising around town, traffic driving and daily use situations. The reason for this issue is the fact that at cruising, the engine is still only requiring the small amount of fuel it has always needed in those light throttle situations (which is most of the time). Not to forget that now there is added air volume in the high load situations of driving which leads to the need for extra fuel.

MS engine Miller Performance decided to cure this problem by designing the Miller M-fs Fueling Intake manifold. With the stock injector size being used and not replaced by something bigger, Miller Performance added 6 more injectors. You might wonder how these injectors are being controlled. We do it with a “Boost vs. RPM” tuning utility. This allows tuning of the 6 added injectors in conjunction with the re-mapping of the stock ECU for ultimate drivability and power. And now the problem of covering a larger range of power output, with the use of the original BMW Engine Management System in tact, is cured.

Ignition Timing and Safety Controls

Ignition timing needs to be retarded in boost situations, if this does not occur engine damage is inevitable. Ignition tables have been remapped in order to eliminate any problems that may occur due to advanced ignition timing under boost situations. Miller Performance is using a proprietary "CATCS" system that has built in fail safe controls. If the system detects a malfunction, the CATCS processor will put the car into a fail safe mode, thus preserving you engine and your wallet.

MS engine For example, if the CATCS fails, or is not keeping up with demand, the CATCS Processor will cut power back in multiple stages until the car is operating safely. Monitoring your engines vitals every 1/1000 of a second, this processor reacts fast to keep you engine in check.

The development of this processor is extremely important. Not only will you be sure you won’t blow your engine, you will be sure your wallet is safe from costly repairs that an otherwise inferior system could produce.

Charge Cooling with the CATCS

MS engine When designing the inter-cooling system for the M30, Miller Performance intended to use an Air to Liquid after-cooler system right from the start. The systems were tested over and over and proved to be the answer for the space limited e34; on top of many other advantages. For instance the short distance from the turbo to the engines cylinders cuts down on turbo lag, and adds response and the ability to integrate the by-pass valve into its design. This system is also more efficient in the sense of drivability, with no heat soak in stop and go traffic.

MS engine Taking Air to Liquid cooling technology to the next level, Miller Performance has created a system known as the CATCS. Standing for “Charging air temperature control system” it is fully self monitored and maintained. The use of refrigeration technology was employed in this unprecedented heat exchanging unit. Built into the stock BMW A/C system, Miller Performance can now control the water temperature! This means that the charge temperature is EXTREMELY CONSISTENT! No matter how hot the outside ambient air temperature is, the CATCS will keep the water and therefore the charge temperature, in a safe and efficient buffer zone. This produces consistent and reliable power.

This out of the box thinking has allowed for the unique CATCS processor mentioned in the above section. Keeping your charge temperatures in check means you don’t have to worry about super heated compressed air, and you NEVER experience heat soak. In fact, the less you move, the cooler the water will become!

No functionality is lost with interior A/C either. It is still available on demand and is not sacrificed one bit.

Turbocharger

During the quest to find the perfect turbo for the MS turbo engine system about 5 different turbocharger units were explored until we the decision to use a Liquid cooled, ball bearing Garrett turbocharger was made. This unit is the best, most advanced turbocharger Miller Performance could see as a viable option. The Liquid cooling feature sparked Miller Performance’s attention because it will keep the turbo at a temperature that is consistent with the rest of the engine. The Ball bearing feature is also a big plus, as it will greatly reduce turbo lag and will take extreme boost pressures better that a regular turbocharger.

Miller Performance Options

We know people like options, and we know that a very powerful car can be dangerous in poor weather. With the Miller Designed "Power Plus" button, you can drive your car in slippery wet weather with a little more ease. When the button is not activated your boost is limited to 6 psi. Sure, you will still be able to spin the tires and go crazy, but it helps control your vehicle more. Once the roads dry up and you want some real fun, activate the button to reveal the full boost and power tune.

Our optional on-board diagnostic computer is a small LCD screen that will display your engine vitals such as intake temperature, boost pressure, oil temperature and so on. Also, being integrated into the CATCS system, you can monitor your CATCS unit and be alerted to any faults or fail safe modes - a great utility for those hardcore drivers.
