Instead of head bolts, studs are used for a number of reasons. For race engines, studs allow for a faster and easier way to install the engine and then maintain it once it has been put in use. Another reason for studs is that they provide a more accurate and consistent torque loading. When you use bolts to secure your head, the fastener is actually being "twisted" while its being torqued to the correct reading. Accordingly, the bolt is reacting to two different forces simultaneously. Finally, APR head studs offer the highest strength. In forced induction systems, over time the factory bolts can "stretch" out creating a loss in performance and engine safety. APR head studs are thread rolled AFTER heat treating resulting in 1000% (ten times) better fatigue strength that those that are threaded before the heat treating.
